En función de la capacidad de asientos y del uso al que se destinan,existen diferentes tipos de automóviles.
Un automovil de pasajeros esta pensado para transporte privado depersonas , un automóvil de carga se diseña para transportar mercancias,y un automovil de carreras se utiliza en competencias automovilisticas.
Los tres tipos generales son automovil de turismo,camioneta y automovil deportivo.Camioneta abarca varios tipos mas preciso: automovil todo terreno, monovolumen, pickup y furgoneta.Los otros dos incluyen distintas carrocerias, pero no tipos de de automoviles esencialmente distintos.
Por fabricantes de automoviles se entiende las compañias que diseñan,desarrollan,fabrican y pruebanlos automoviles bajo una propia identidad,ya sean empresas independientes o integradas en un grupo mayor.En la siguiente lista se incluyen los actuales fabricantes de automoviles.Los fabricantes ya desaparecidos se encuentran en la lista de marcas de autos debido a que los automoviles mas modernos son mas seguros.
